2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct vision.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete text from the president's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

His guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Take on the competition with new abilities, risks, and tests that shift every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

The game does not have an official release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation progresses.
